Right at the end of our trip is a 3-day stop in Phuket. With Ruben having visited the country 9 times, you’d think he would have been here before. It was actually both our first time. For our trip in Phuket, we stayed in Hyatt Regency Phuket Resort. Probably one of the best, of not the best hotel in the area. Hyatt Regency Phuket is located in Kamala, Northern part of Phuket.
Some assumptions we had?
This city will be super expensive.
This place will be super touristy.
This place will be beautiful and full of sun time.
How to travel to Phuket?
You can do either by plane or by taking a series of taxis and buses and ferries. And yes, we chose the second. If we can be more predictable.ha! We came from Koh Samui bus station. We took a bus to the ferry, a very short ride. Two hours ferry to reach Surat Thani and a local bus going to Phuket (3 hours). The price of everything was THB 450. From Koh Samui so it took us 12 hours in total of travel. Buses, ferry, waiting times and transfers. If you want to travel by land, it will highly depend where you’re coming from. We were coming Only suggested if you’re on a budget or if you have a lot of time. We work with a small team, so this gives us space to choose these kinds of travel.
If you’re buying plane tickets to Phuket, check the weather and browse skyscanner for flights. If you’d ever run to see issues, check out this hack. Not applicable at all times, but may easily come in handy.
First Impresions at Hyatt Regency Phuket Resort
Hyatt Hotel Regency Phuket was pretty much what you will expect from a high end hotel. And ironically, what you will not expect. The service was solid. We had someone take care of our luggage, and we were briefed about our stay. We had the club cart take us to our room. And why? Because we got upgraded to the Hill Top Suite. Yup, that was truly sweet!
The hotel has 200 rooms. You can imagine the Hill Top Suite to be on the top most area of the whole hotel. 200 Sq meters, we have our own balcony on the first floor, (it was a 2-floor suite, a very large bathroom, a bathtub, a his and her sink, and a huge receiving/living room.
But those weren’t even the highlight. Check this. 👇
Yup. Bedroom with a view to the beach and the neighboring islands. You can expect breathtaking morning and sunset views.
We had all the quality coffee we wanted, espresso machine in our room, and we can request or the club cart everytime we need to go down.
The hotel has a huge infinity pool with a seaview, and 3 restaurants and it’s own spa. You can guess why so many of the guests stay inside the hotel. Definitely made for relaxation.
We were in luck because it has been raining for almost 4 days (more than half our stay in Koh Pangan, and all the days of our stay in Koh Samui), and we got amazing sunshine in Phuket. It rained at night, but it was a whopping — degrees out, so that was a nice refreshment.
What to do around Hyatt Regency Phuket Resort
Hyatt Regency Phuket has an amazing location. You can just lounge in the pool whole day, stay in your room, or dine in the Hyatt Regency’s delectable restaurants or you can visit Kamala and the popular, Patong.
Kamala is a beach area, much quieter and less populated than Patong. However for us, it already felt really touristy. Thailand beaches are very popular expect a lot of these beaches to be super populated.
Kamala is good for a swim, although if you fancy some local or international food places, supermarkets and small shopping stalls, walk around as its a good place. There’s also a park if you want to chill for free. It has a playground for children, so mostly fun for the little ones.
Buying beer in Thailand? Remember to not plan to drink between 2-5pm. We were shopping for food and drinks in a local supermarket getting ready to go around when the cashier told us we can’t buy beer. Bummer. Ha! Ruben already had his Leo’s planned for the night.
Hyatt Regency Phuket has a free shuttle service (every hour) to and from Kamala, so you can plan your trips there. Make sure you check the schedule. If you missed the shuttle and you’re not tight in budget, there’s a 300 Baht taxi ride or a 25 minutes walk!
Or try Grab and the price can be down of THB 300.
If you’re up for a much longer trip, you can visit Patong. Hyatt Regency Phuket charges 100 Baht per person and services people one way. You’ll have to get your taxi back to the hotel. Patong is definitely full of life for its good beach, and lots and lots of bars, clubs and restaurants. If you’re looking for this vibe, this trip is for you.
Very touristy. Warm water. You can just lay on the beach for some sun love, swim in the water or do some water sports.. Be warned. Tourist prices can get pricey. We suggest to be prepared.
For our stay in Phuket, we decided to visit both Kamala and Patong, but finally dined in Hyatt Regency’s Sun Grill.
The Sunset Grill restaurant serves one of the best seafood in town. And yup, we’ve tried it to test it. It’s a good mix of Mediterranean cuisine, wine and a good view for the sunset. Breathtaking views and good ambience. It was such an amazing place to dine. There were actually a lot of people who dined. More couples, but we’ve seen some families too. Menu is pretty good so it can match the taste of everyone.
We ordered the Chilled Seafood Combination platter as appetizzer. For main couse we chose Lamb and Pork rack with red wine, salt and peeper sauce. For desserts our choice was Chiang Mai Rhubarb and Tiramisu.
Our favorite? The Lamb Rack and Rhubarb! Ahh. Best choice.
The Chilled Seafood was also high-class. It was a crazy appetizer. Really delicious. We partnered our dinner with some beers and juices.
The breakfast buffet is definitely worth it. International and Asian cuisine and really really good food. We suggest starting your day full and happy.
Ruben loved the smoothies kept in high refrigerator glass cabinets. You have your salad, juices and milk, stored fresh. Good hide of bread and Asian dishes. You’ll find something that will match your taste.
If you’re spending a short staycation in Phuket, open with budget and not willing to cut down on comfort, Hyatt Regency is the place to stay. Luxury at its best, with all facilities and services you’ll need. Click here to check their website.
We have definitely ended our Thailand trip the best way possible.
